Waaoh! Saturday 6th December, 2011 shall for a long time be a memorable day in the minds of our 2011 Batch B Trainees. It is hard to believe that the time has already come for graduation of our trainees! Exactly eight months earlier, specifically in February, 2011, these community-nominated youths had started their training activities in various skill areas at the DSF Training Center, Iyara, Warri. As early as 9 am on the day, the trainees had begun to flock into the 600-capacity Ugbori Community Town Hall for the event decked in their academic gowns flanked by their family and friends as well as well-wishers who had come to celebrate with them. The event, which was under the chairmanship of the Chief-Inspector of Education, Warri South Local Government was attended by the Foundation‟s Trustees as well as other important personalities.
Studies have shown that women represent a major contributor to family incomes particularly in rural communities which makes up a substantial part of the Niger Delta region. Based on this notion and in pursuance of our mission, our Foundation commenced a Women Empowerment project in August 2011 aimed at empowering a total of 69 co-operative societies in Delta and Bayelsa States. Indeed, the joy of the women and by extension, the whole Ayakoromor community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State knew no bounds on Friday, 15th May, 2012 when DSCAEF gave out micro-credit soft loans to 10 selected women co-operative societies in the community. The event was marked with fun-fare and jubilation as cultural dance groups were mobilized by the community to welcome the DSCAEF Team led by the Programmes Director, Prince Ajulisan Akumagba. The Women Leader of the community, Mrs. Oluigwe Elfreda, who spoke on behalf of the community stated that the women in the community are quite appreciative and promised monitoring of the soft loans to ensure that it truly revolves to enable more women in the community benefit. A total of 30 women co-operative societies have so far benefitted so far from the project since its inception.
In April, 2012, the DSCAEF Governance projects‟ activities kicked-off with a Consultative Forum designed to bring together CBOs‟, NGOs‟ and other relevant groups and organizations that are currently working on elections and the electoral processes in Delta state. The meeting was in direct response to the announcement by the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, (DSIEC) that the state‟s Local Government elections shall be held by November, 2012. A total of 13 NGOs‟ and 15 CBOs attended the meeting which was held at the event hall of the prestigious Mciver Hotel, along Refinery Road in Warri, Delta state on Saturday April 17th, 2012. The meeting was declared open by the our Programmes Director, Prince Ajulisan Akumagba, who charged civil society groups to be responsive on the need to actualize free, credible and fair elections at the planned elections which shall be held across the 25 local government areas of the state. Speaking on behalf of the civil society groups, Mr. Gabriel Okonedo of Action For Community Peace, (ACP) thanked DSCAEF for their contribution towards community development in the past while assuring of their commitment to the planned Election Situation Room project that shall be hosted and chaired by DSCAEF for the LGAs election in the state.
Preparatory to the planned 2012 Local Government elections in Delta state, DSCAEF has held its inaugural political awareness and sensitization meeting at Ode-Itsekiri community in Warri South Local Government Area. The Town Hall Meeting which has been christened “Local Community Awareness-Creation” shall be part of our Foundation‟s effort to both update and inform the community electorates on the need to be political conscious and participate in the planned November, 2012 election across the 25 local government areas of the state.
The Partnership Initiative for the Niger Delta, (PIND) has formally engaged DSCAEF for the conduct of Key Informant Interviews, (KIIs‟) and Focus Group Discussions, (FGDs) in the Niger Delta. The engagement for the assignment can be aptly attributed to the evident research-expertise of DSCAEF personnel on the issues of peace and security in the Niger Delta. The project which is under PIND‟s Partnership For Peace, (P4P) component is geared towards ascertaining and obtaining critical inputs from relevant stakeholders across the delta before the actual implementation of its planned intervention. The project location for DSCAEF‟s is Rivers State while 3 other selected CSO‟s shall cover other 5 states in the region. The choice of Rivers state is not connected with the fact that our Foundation has in the past carried out research activities there, built networks and partnerships in various communities in the state. These rich experiences shall be brought to bear on the project itself. We do look forward to a very interesting and revealing project in the near future.
